William Shaw was an army man, he fought at Waterloo (The battle of Waterloo was in 1815.), served in the rifle brigade and was a captain in the Leicestershire militia. Ensign Wm Shaw of the Leicester militia became second leiutenant on 25 Feb 1813 and joined the 95th regiment of foot. He is listed at this rank and regiment in the 1814 and 1815 army lists, in the 1818 army list he is a 1st lieutenant in the rifle brigade, he achieved this rank on 26 June 1817. In the 1821 army list he islisted on half pay. He remained on half pay untill the 1829 list, when he emigrated to Australia. He is not mentioned in the army lists after 1829. He arrived in Western Australia on the ship Egyptian on 13 Feb 1830 with his wife, Elizabeth and6 children. A further 3 children were born in Australia. A letter written by Peter Cooper Hardy in 1907 indicates that William was "the first police magistrate in Perth and Hobart under Sir John Franklin, afterwards he movedto Bellview (sic), Upper Swan." He was granted 7,000 acres in the Avon district and 1,000 acres in the Swan River Colony which he named Belvoir.
